# Fasting

## What it is

**Fasting** — going without solid food, usually living on water, lemonade, or
juices for a time — is the second pillar of the healing system, alongside the
[[mucusless-diet|Mucusless Diet]]. Ehret calls it "Nature's only and omnipotent
remedy," and points to the animal world: a sick or wounded animal stops eating
until it recovers. To Ehret, that instinct reveals the truth that healing comes
from *not eating*, not from "good nourishing food."

His core argument is the [[vitality-formula-of-life|Formula of Life]]: when you
stop eating, the body stops taking in new waste and turns its full energy on the
old waste, dissolving and expelling it. Strength, he claims, often *rises* during
a fast once the dissolved waste has cleared — he reports fasters who felt stronger
on day 20 than day 5, which he offers as proof that vitality comes from clean,
unobstructed function, not from food.

Ehret had unusual personal authority here: he set a then-world-record **49-day
fast** under official supervision, and ran the first sanitarium dedicated to
fasting combined with the mucusless diet.

## What happens during a fast (in the sources' terms)

1. **First days** — the body sheds the immediate burden of overeating; you may
   feel fine, even good.
2. **The hard middle** — as tissues contract, old [[mucus-theory|mucus and poisons]] get pressed into the bloodstream for elimination. *This* is when you
feel weak, dizzy, or unwell — not from lack of food, but from your own waste in
   circulation.
3. **Relief** — once that batch of waste passes out through the kidneys, you feel
clear and strong again. Then the cycle repeats at a deeper level.

This explains the system's repeated warning: feeling bad during a fast is the
waste, not the fasting.

## How to fast (and how not to)

The sources give detailed, cautious rules:

- **Prepare first.** Don't fast cold. Move toward a mucusless diet and use
laxatives/enemas beforehand so there's less to dump (see
  [[constipation-and-the-colon|Constipation and the Colon]]).
- **Start small.** Begin with the **no-breakfast plan**, then a **24-hour /
one-meal-a-day** fast, then short 2–5 day fasts — *intermittent* fasting
alternating with mucusless eating days. Ehret calls this the **systematic
  fast**.
- **Drinks.** Ehret prefers light lemonade with a little honey, or vegetable
juices, over plain water — the fruit acids help "thin" the mucus. Drink less to
make a fast work harder; be careful with fruit juices, which can loosen poisons
  too fast.
- **Keep the bowels moving.** Enemas every day or two during a fast.
- **Breaking the fast is as important as the fast itself.** The first meal should
be *laxative*, not "nourishing" — typically starchless vegetables (stewed
spinach, sauerkraut) — so it sweeps the loosened waste out. Ehret cites two
deaths caused not by fasting but by the *wrong first meal* (dates for a diabetic
  meat-eater; boiled potatoes that lodged in a too-long-fasted 60-year-old).

## A major course-correction: Ehret turns against long fasts

This is one of the clearest cases of an idea *evolving* within the sources
themselves. Early on, long fasting made Ehret famous. But by the time he wrote the
*Mucusless Diet Healing System*, he had reversed course:

> "I am no longer in favor of long fasts. In fact, it may become criminal to let
> a patient fast for 30 or 40 days on water."

His reasoning: a badly clogged person on a long water fast can be poisoned by
their own dissolved waste — they don't starve, they "suffocate in their own
mucus." He estimates a long fast would *kill* the majority of seriously ill
people. He also warns that the popular advice to "fast until the tongue is clean"
is dangerous and caused deaths he knew of. The safe path is short, repeated fasts
inside a careful [[transition-diet|transition]].

## The "Superior Fast"

Beyond healing, Ehret describes a near-mystical experience he calls the **Superior
Fast**: in a body already cleansed by the diet, fasting on air and water alone is
said to produce extraordinary mental clarity, energy, and spiritual awakening —
"V" equals "P" with almost no "O." This links fasting to the
[[spiritual-dimension|spiritual dimension]] of the work.

## Where the sources agree and differ

- **Agreement:** Ehret and Spira agree completely that fasting is central, that it
must be built up gradually, and that breaking a fast correctly is critical.
- **Difference / evolution:** The shift away from long fasts is Ehret correcting
his *own* earlier reputation — an internal disagreement across his career. Spira
follows the mature position: short, systematic fasts, well prepared, never the
  heroic 40-day water fast.
- **Reality check.** Short-term and intermittent fasting are studied in modern
medicine and can be safe for healthy adults, but extended fasting carries real
dangers (electrolyte imbalance, refeeding syndrome, and more) and the sources'
own death anecdotes underline this. The claim that fasting cures serious disease
is not supported by evidence. Anyone with a medical condition should not fast
  without professional supervision.
