# The New Physiology

## What it is

Ehret argued that to understand his healing system you first have to unlearn what
he called the errors of "the Old Physiology" — mainstream medical biology — and
accept a **New Physiology**. He claimed mainstream science was fundamentally wrong
about five things:

1. How blood circulates
2. Metabolism ("the change of matter")
3. The need for high-protein foods
4. What blood is made of
5. How blood is built

This article covers the first, second, fourth, and fifth; the protein claim is big
enough for its own page ([[protein-and-nutrition|The Protein Error and Nutrition]]).

> **Important:** this is the part of the sources that conflicts most directly with
> well-established science. It's presented here as faithfully as possible so you
> understand the sources' worldview — but several of these claims are simply
> incorrect by modern anatomy and physiology. See the caveats throughout.

## The lungs as pump, the heart as valve

Ehret's signature physiological claim is a reversal: he says the **lungs are the
pump** that drives circulation, and the **heart is merely a valve** that the
moving blood operates — the opposite of what medicine has taught since William
Harvey (1600s). This ties directly to the [[vitality-formula-of-life|air-gas engine]] idea: air pressure powers the body.

His arguments:
- Breathe faster (climb a hill) and your heart speeds up — so, he reasons, air
  pressure drives the heart.
- Stimulants and depressants in the blood change heart rate — so the blood
controls the heart, not the reverse.

**Caveat:** This is incorrect. The heart is a muscular pump; the lungs oxygenate
blood but do not pump it. Heart rate rising with exertion is a normal regulatory
response, not evidence that the lungs drive circulation.

## Metabolism: "you don't burn your own flesh"

Mainstream physiology says the body's cells are constantly broken down and must be
rebuilt from food (especially protein). Ehret calls this the most "dangerous
doctrine ever imposed on humankind." His counter-claim:

- When you fast, you are **not** "living off your own flesh." What looks like
burning muscle is really just the **elimination of waste** once the stomach is
  empty.
- The body "does not expel, burn up, or use up a single cell that is in vital
condition." Lean people and the cleanest bodies fast *longest* and most easily —
which, he argues, disproves the idea that fasting consumes living tissue.
- "Weight = health" is an error: a "healthy" heavy person, he says, is largely
carrying pounds of retained waste, not vibrant flesh.

**Caveat:** Modern science is clear that during fasting the body *does* draw on its
own stored fat and, eventually, protein for energy. The observation that lean,
adapted people tolerate fasting differently is real, but the underlying mechanism
Ehret describes is not.

## What blood is made of

Ehret reinterprets blood components through the mucus lens:

- **White blood cells are waste.** In perhaps his most extreme claim, Ehret says
white blood corpuscles aren't disease-fighting cells but *mucus* — undigested
residue from protein and starch. (He credits a Dr. Thomas Powell with a similar
  idea.)
- **Iron and fruit sugar** are the truly vital ingredients of good blood; he
describes blood's red color as essentially iron oxide ("rust").

This leads into one of the most uncomfortable passages in Ehret's writing: he
claimed the "white race" was a pale, "pathological" condition caused by an excess
of white blood cells / mucus, and that on the mucusless diet people's skin browned
and they looked healthier. Spira addresses the racial framing carefully — see
[[sex-and-eugenics|Sex, Reproduction, and the Eugenics Question]] and
[[sources-and-authors|The Sources and Their Authors]].

**Caveat:** White blood cells are a well-understood, essential part of the immune
system, not waste. This claim is false and was central to Ehret's mistaken view of
infection and immunity.

## How blood is built

Here Ehret states the positive core of his nutrition: the master food for building
good blood is **not** protein or mineral salts but **grape/fruit sugar** (the
simple sugar in ripe fruit). He argues vegetable-eating animals (and humans)
transform food into grape sugar first, and that even the small amount of protein
the body needs is built up *from* sugar — "is it necessary that a cow drink milk to
make milk?" This is the constructive flip side of [[protein-and-nutrition|the protein error]].

## Where the sources agree and differ

- **Agreement:** Spira presents the New Physiology as Ehret's genius and does not
dispute it. The air-gas engine and the mucus-nature of white blood cells are
  repeated approvingly.
- **Difference:** Spira's contribution is mostly to *frame and footnote* — adding
etymology, historical context, and modern references — rather than to challenge
the physiology. Where Ehret's framing is socially dated (the race material),
Spira contextualizes it rather than endorsing it.
- **Reality check (overall):** This is the weakest part of the sources
  scientifically. The lungs-as-pump, white-cells-as-waste, and no-self-consumption-
during-fasting claims are contradicted by solid, repeatable evidence. The
practical diet advice does not actually depend on these mechanisms being true —
so you can understand the system's *practices* without accepting its physiology.
