# One Disease, Many Names

## What it is

A striking claim runs through all of Ehret's work: there is really only **one
disease**, and all the thousands of named illnesses are just that one disease
showing up in different places. Ehret opens the *Mucusless Diet Healing System*
with the line:

> "Every disease, no matter what name it is known by medical science, is
> **Constipation**."

He doesn't only mean blocked bowels. He means a "clogging up of the entire pipe
system" — what Spira calls **constitutional encumbrance**: the whole body, down
to the tiniest capillaries, gummed up with [[mucus-theory|mucus and waste]]. A
symptom is simply an "extraordinary local constipation" — a traffic jam of waste
at one particular spot.

So a headache, a tumor, arthritis, a cold, and kidney disease are, in this view,
the same underlying problem appearing at different addresses. The medical habit
of giving each a separate name (the sources note medicine recognizes thousands
of disease categories — over 12,000 by a modern count Spira cites) is, to Ehret,
a distraction from the single root cause.

## Latent, acute, and chronic disease

Ehret divides the one disease into three stages, defined by how actively the
body is trying to clean itself:

- **Latent disease.** The "normal," supposedly healthy person is quietly storing
waste, poisons, and old drugs. Ehret insists that what medicine calls normal
health is actually this hidden, encumbered state. Everyone has it.
- **Acute disease.** When the body stirs up and tries to expel a load of waste,
you get a "shock" — a cold, the flu, a fever, pneumonia. Ehret reframes these
not as attacks *on* the body but as the body's own **cleansing effort**. Fever,
for instance, is "friction" as thick waste is pushed through the circulation.
- **Chronic disease.** When that cleansing effort is repeatedly suppressed (by
drugs, or by continuing to eat through it), the process drags on for years. The
word *chronic* comes from the Greek *chronos*, "time" — disease that nature was
  prevented from finishing quickly.

This is one of the most counter-intuitive ideas in the whole system: **the
symptom is the cure in progress.** A runny nose, a fever, diarrhea, even skin
eruptions are, in Ehret's telling, the body healing itself, not failing.

## How a single cause makes many symptoms

Ehret walks through example after example to show "local constipation" at work:

- A **cold** clears waste from the head and throat.
- **Pneumonia / consumption (tuberculosis)** is the same cleansing reaching the
  lungs.
- **Rheumatism and gout** are mucus and uric acid settling in the joints, where
  circulation is weakest.
- **Goiters and boils** are nature dumping waste to keep it out of circulation.
- Even **short-sightedness, deafness, and mental illness** are described as
congestion of the relevant organ or the brain.

## Where the sources agree

Ehret and Spira fully agree on the "oneness of disease." Spira's role is mainly
to clarify that the word *disease* is being used in its old sense — from Old
French *desaise*, "lack of ease, discomfort" — and that neither author claims to
*diagnose or treat* medical diseases in the legal/clinical sense. Spira is
careful about this because making medical claims as a non-physician can be
illegal in many countries.

## Where they differ, and the honest caveats

- **Tone vs. precision.** Ehret states the sweeping claims plainly ("I cured
several cases" of stammering, blindness, insanity). Spira tends to soften and
contextualize these in footnotes, occasionally pointing readers to other modern
methods (for example, the Bates method for eyesight) rather than asserting a
  cure.
- **Reality check.** This is one of the system's furthest departures from
mainstream medicine. The idea that one cause underlies all disease — and that
fevers, infections, and tumors are all "the same thing" — is not supported by
modern science, which has strong, specific evidence for distinct causes
(pathogens, genetics, autoimmune processes, and so on). Treat "one disease" as
the organizing *philosophy* of these books, not as medical fact.
