# Physical Culture: Exercise, Sun, Air, and Bathing

## What it is

Diet and [[fasting|fasting]] do the main work in this system, but Ehret adds a set
of bodily practices he calls **physical adjustments** — ways to *enforce and speed
up* elimination from the outside. The principle behind all of them is the same:
they "vibrate" or stimulate the tissues, boosting circulation so the body can
loosen and dump [[mucus-theory|waste]] faster. The *Mucusless Diet Healing System*
devotes its final lesson to them, and the book *Physical Fitness* frames the whole
topic.

A constant caution runs through this material: **don't overdo it, especially on
"bad" days** (days of heavy elimination during a fast or strict diet). On those
days, rest. Save vigorous activity for days you feel strong. "Avoid extremes of all
kinds" is Ehret's summary rule.

## The practices

- **Exercise.** Ehret prefers the most *natural* movements: walking, hiking
(climbing hills deepens breathing naturally), dancing, and — notably — **singing**,
which he calls the most natural breathing exercise. He also gives a short routine
of simple stretching and tension exercises, each paired with deep breathing
before an open window. The emphasis is always on **breath** (tying back to the
[[vitality-formula-of-life|air-gas engine]]) and on enjoyment, not strain.
- **Sunbaths.** Direct sun on the bare skin is described as an excellent
"invisible waste eliminator" that rejuvenates the skin and supplies "electricity,
energy, and vitality." Start with 20–30 minutes, head covered; build up as you get
  cleaner.
- **Air baths.** Time spent nude before an open window, letting the skin breathe —
considered as essential as water bathing.
- **Internal baths (enemas).** Washing out the lower colon to help eject loosened
waste — covered in [[constipation-and-the-colon|Constipation and the Colon]].
- **Bathing.** Ehret is moderate here: no need for daily hot soapy baths, and he
warns against the fashionable year-round cold-shower "shock." He recommends gentle
cool-water rubs instead. A clean diet, he claims, gives you good skin from the
  inside.

## "Physical Fitness thru a Superior Diet"

The book *Physical Fitness* adds a historical/cultural argument: Ehret holds up
**classical Greece** as proof that peak physical culture, fasting, and dietetics go
together — the athletic ideal of the Greek body, the temple "sleep" cures (which he
reads as fasting), the fasting of Pythagoras and the dietetic teaching of
Hippocrates. His thesis: a great civilization is built on great bodies, and Western
civilization is decaying because it has neglected the body for "over-culture" of the
mind and appetite. Once the body is cleansed, he says, physical training then
produces real strength, beauty, and even mental and spiritual elevation.

## Where the sources agree and differ

- **Agreement:** Ehret and Spira agree these practices are *supportive* — helpers
that enforce elimination — never substitutes for diet and fasting. They also
agree on moderation and resting during heavy elimination.
- **A telling priority:** Note that physical treatments alone are explicitly said to
*relieve but never fully heal*, because they don't stop the intake of bad food (a
point shared with [[critique-of-medicine|Critique of Medicine]]). Spira, himself a
professional musician, lives out the "singing/breathing as exercise" idea; he
presents this material faithfully with little need for correction since it's
  mostly gentle, common-sense lifestyle advice.
- **Reality check.** Moderate exercise, sunlight (in sensible amounts), fresh air,
and good hygiene are genuinely healthy — this is the least controversial part of
the sources. The specific *mechanism* claimed (that they expel "mucus" and that sun
charges a "storage battery" of vitality) is the sources' interpretation, not
established physiology. Sensible sun exposure aids vitamin D but excess raises skin
cancer risk — moderation, which Ehret himself urges, is wise.
