# The Sources and Their Authors

*This wiki is organized by **concept**, not by book or author. But to read the
other articles well, it helps to know who wrote these sources, when, and how they
relate. That's what this background page is for.*

## Two authors, one tradition

Everything in this wiki comes from a single school of thought with two voices:

- **Prof. Arnold Ehret (1866–1922)** — the originator. A German artist and teacher
who, after being declared incurably ill with Bright's disease (a kidney
disease), recovered through fasting and fruit dieting. He ran popular sanitariums
in Switzerland and California, set a supervised **49-day fasting record**, and
developed the **Mucusless Diet Healing System**. He died in 1922 in Los Angeles
after a fall, two weeks after completing his major book. (Some followers have long
suspected foul play; the sources note the contested circumstances.)
- **Prof. Spira (born ~1980s)** — the modern interpreter. A professional jazz
trombonist and academic who, around 2002, weighed 280 pounds and suffered chronic
illnesses. Introduced to Ehret's book by a fellow musician ("Brother Air"), he
reports losing 110 pounds and shedding lifelong ailments and medications. He has
since **re-edited and annotated** Ehret's works for 21st-century readers and
  written his own.

So the relationship is **founder and disciple-editor**, roughly a century apart.
This is why the articles in this wiki find far more *agreement* than disagreement
between them — and why the disagreements that *do* exist are usually Spira gently
updating, contextualizing, or correcting Ehret rather than opposing him.

## The six source texts

| Source | Author(s) | What it's mainly about |
|---|---|---|
| **Mucusless Diet Healing System** (annotated) | Ehret, ed. Spira | The complete system in 25 "lessons" — the centerpiece. |
| **Rational Fasting** (annotated) | Ehret, ed. Spira | The original mucus theory and the foundations of fasting and "regeneration." |
| **Thus Speaketh the Stomach** (annotated) | Ehret, ed. Spira | A vivid essay in which the stomach "speaks" about overeating — the "tragedy of nutrition." |
| **The Definite Cure of Chronic Constipation** (annotated) | Ehret & Fred Hirsch, ed. Spira | The colon, laxatives, and bowel cleansing. |
| **Physical Fitness** (annotated) | Ehret, ed. Spira | Diet + fasting + physical culture, and the spiritual/religious concept. |
| **Spira Speaks** | Spira | Modern essays, dialogs, and consultations applying the diet today. |

A few recurring supporting names: **Fred Hirsch**, Ehret's most devoted student and
publisher, who preserved and promoted the works (and co-wrote the constipation
book); and **Ragnar Berg**, a contemporary chemist whose food table Ehret reprinted
and Spira later replaced (see [[mucus-forming-and-mucus-free-foods|Mucus-Forming vs Mucus-Free Foods]]).

## How Spira's edits appear

In the annotated books, Spira's additions show up as endnotes, italicized
"purports" before or after lessons, and editorial notes. He states his goal plainly:
not to rewrite Ehret, but to make the work understandable for modern readers, smooth
out archaic language, and address common misunderstandings. The two notable places
he takes real editorial liberty — replacing the Ragnar Berg food table, and
contextualizing the [[sex-and-eugenics|eugenics/race language]] — are the clearest
cases of the modern voice diverging from the original.

## A word on reliability (please read)

This tradition is a heterodox, early-1900s "back-to-nature" healing philosophy. It
contains some genuinely sensible lifestyle advice (eat more fruit and vegetables,
don't overeat, move your body, get sun and fresh air) wrapped around a theoretical
core — the [[mucus-theory|mucus theory]], the [[new-physiology|"air-gas engine" physiology]], the rejection of germ theory and dietary protein — that **conflicts
with well-established modern science.** Several specific health claims in the
sources are incorrect and some could be harmful if taken literally (extended water
fasting, treating serious disease with diet alone, abandoning protein and B12).

This wiki's job is to explain *what the sources say*, clearly and fairly. It is not
medical advice and not an endorsement. Where the sources make strong medical claims,
the relevant articles add a brief, neutral "reality check." For your own health
decisions, consult a qualified professional.
