# The Spiritual and Religious Dimension

## What it is

For Ehret, the mucusless diet is not only about physical health — it's a spiritual
path. He weaves religion, scripture, and mysticism through the whole system,
especially in *Physical Fitness* and its essay "A Religious Concept of Physical,
Spiritual, and Mental Dietetics." This dimension explains the almost evangelical
tone of the writing ("Peace, Love, and Breath!" is Spira's recurring sign-off).

## The core spiritual ideas

- **The "Paradise diet."** Ehret reads Genesis 1:29 ("every herb bearing seed...
and every tree in which is the fruit... to you it shall be for meat") as God
  prescribing fruit as humanity's original food. Eden was a literal fruit garden;
the [[mucusless-diet|mucusless diet]] is a return to it. The "forbidden fruit,"
he argues, was never the apple (the apple is the *ideal* food) but the
  "false foods" of civilization.
- **Fasting as purification.** Ehret connects fasting to nearly every major
religious tradition (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism,
the Egyptian mystery schools), pointing to Jesus's 40 days in the desert,
Moses, Pythagoras's required 40-day fast, and more. Fasting is the "physiological
fire of purification" — the cleansing you must pass through to re-enter paradise.
- **"Physiological Christianity."** In his boldest theological move, Ehret
reinterprets Christian doctrine in dietary terms: salvation is *physical*
regeneration; "resurrection of the flesh" comes "by water and spirit," where
*spirit* is the Greek *spiro*, **air/breath**; Christ's "blood" at the Last
Supper was unfermented grape juice — to Ehret the perfect "blood food." He calls
Christ "primarily a physician" who healed by natural law, not miracle.
- **Breath as spirit.** The link between air and the divine ties straight back to
the [[vitality-formula-of-life|air-gas engine]]: the "breath of God" is, first,
fresh air. This is the root of the name **Spira** (Latin for air/spirit).
- **"Invisible food."** In a clean body, Ehret says, sunlight, fresh air, the scent
of fruit and flowers, and "magnetic" energy all nourish — food "from the
infinite." This blurs the line between diet, spirituality, and the
[[physical-culture|physical-culture]] practices of sun and air bathing.

## A note on grandeur and "superiority"

Ehret's spiritual writing often reaches for sweeping, utopian visions — a
"God-like," "diseaseless, superior" new human, a regenerated race, heaven on
earth. Some of this language shades into the troubling eugenic and racial themes
handled in [[sex-and-eugenics|Sex, Reproduction, and the Eugenics Question]]. Read
in context, the "superiority" he means is usually *physical purity through diet*,
not a claim of ethnic superiority — but the vocabulary is dated and uncomfortable,
and Spira flags it for modern readers.

## Where the sources agree and differ

- **Agreement:** Spira embraces the spiritual framing — the back-to-nature,
paradise, breath-as-spirit themes run through his own writing and music (his
band is named the "Breathairean Ensemble," and he speaks of "physiological
  liberation").
- **Difference:** Spira is more cautious with the religious *rhetoric*, adding
footnotes that contextualize Ehret's scriptural readings and explicitly
distancing the work from the racist connotations the word "eugenics" later
acquired. He presents the spirituality as inspiration, not dogma.
- **Reality check.** These are theological and philosophical claims, not testable
ones — they stand or fall on faith and personal meaning, not evidence. They're
included here because they're a genuine, large part of what the sources *say*,
and they explain the movement's devotional character.
