# Vitality and the Formula of Life (V = P − O)

## What it is

This is Ehret's attempt to explain, in one simple equation, what "vitality" — the
life force, energy, strength — actually *is*. He calls it the **Formula of Life**:

> **V = P − O**
>
> **Vitality = Power − Obstruction**

- **V (Vitality)** is your real health, energy, and endurance.
- **P (Power)** is the force that drives the body. Ehret's surprising claim is
that this power comes mainly from **air pressure**, not food (see below).
- **O (Obstruction)** is the [[mucus-theory|mucus, waste, and poisons]] clogging
  the system.

The whole philosophy falls out of this one line: you don't become healthier
mainly by adding *more* (more food, more protein, more "power") — you become
healthier by removing **O**. Subtract the obstruction and vitality rises on its
own. This is why the system is built on *taking things away* — fasting and
cleansing — rather than supplementing.

## The "air-gas engine"

Underneath the formula is Ehret's most radical physiological claim: the human body
is essentially an **air-gas engine**. He argues that the body runs on air the way
an engine runs on fuel and pressure, and that the lungs — not food — are the
primary power source. (Spira reports being told to read and re-read this chapter
five times; it's considered the conceptual key to the whole system.)

From this, Ehret draws a startling conclusion: **vitality does not come primarily
from food at all.** Food, at best, supplies a little material and keeps the
tissues elastic. The real engine is air pressure working through a clean,
unobstructed body. In a body full of waste, even the best food can't help —
because the obstruction ("O") is throttling the engine no matter what you feed it.

This is also why he says you can't simply "build up" a sick person with nourishing
food: feeding a clogged body just adds more obstruction. First remove "O"; "P"
(and therefore "V") rises automatically.

## Why you feel weak when you clean too fast

The formula neatly explains the central experience of the
[[transition-diet|transition]] and [[fasting|fasting]]: when cleansing dissolves a
lot of old waste at once, that waste floods into circulation — **O spikes** — and
you feel terrible, even though you're actually getting cleaner. Push past it (or
slow down), the waste clears, O drops, and vitality surges. Ehret describes
drinking grape juice after a fast, having a dramatic elimination, and immediately
doing 352 knee-bends — O removed, V restored.

## "Food from the infinite"

Ehret takes the air-engine idea to a mystical edge. In a perfectly clean body, he
speculates, "P" is fed not only by air and water but by **electricity, ozone,
sunlight, and even the odor of fruit and flowers** — "invisible food" drawn from
the environment. He even wonders whether nitrogen from the air could be absorbed
directly, removing the need for protein from food. This connects to the
[[physical-culture|physical-culture]] practices (sun, air, breathing) and the
[[spiritual-dimension|spiritual dimension]].

The name *Spira* itself is woven in: Ehret notes the Latin *spira* means "air" and
then "spirit" — "the breath of God is, in fact, first, good fresh air." Professor
Spira took his name from this idea.

## Where the sources agree

Ehret and Spira are fully aligned: the Formula of Life is treated as the
foundational principle, and Spira presents the air-gas engine as "the most
profound rediscovery of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries." There is no
disagreement between them here.

## The honest caveat

The air-gas engine is where these sources depart most sharply from established
science. Human metabolism is powered by energy from **food** (chemical energy
released by oxidizing nutrients), with oxygen as a necessary participant — not by
air pressure driving the body like a pneumatic engine. The related claim that the
lungs (not the heart) pump the blood is anatomically incorrect (see [[new-physiology|The New Physiology]]). Read **V = P − O** as a memorable *metaphor* for
the system's real practical insight — that removing burdens can matter more than
adding inputs — rather than as literal physiology.
